Church of Alexander Nevsky in Strelno

The Church of Saint Alexander Nevsky, located on the outskirts of the village of Strelno in the Grodno region, is a unique example of wooden ecclesiastical architecture in Belarus. Built in the early 19th century, it combines elements of classicism, Empire style, and traditional folk architecture. The church remains active to this day and preserves a rich spiritual and cultural heritage.

History

The church was built in 1800 with funds donated by local landowner Sulkovsky. In 1881, the church received valuable priestly vestments from the Imperial Court Office in memory of the late Empress Maria Alexandrovna. During the 20th century, the church underwent several restorations: first in the 1920s–1930s and later in the 1980s. One of the notable rectors of the parish was priest Boris Timofeevich Novik, who led the church in 1963.

Architecture

The church is a single-frame wooden building with a three-sided apse. It features a gable roof with hip ends, a triangular pediment, and a tower with a tall spire rising through the roof ridge. The walls are clad with horizontally laid wooden boards, and the windows are decorated with semicircular imposts. Inside, a beautifully carved Baroque-style iconostasis with royal doors has been preserved, along with a painted ceiling that adds distinctive character to the interior.
