The fortress wall in Smolensk was erected in the end of the XVI century on the site of an old wooden fortress by the legendary Russian architect Fedor Kon. The stone wall in Smolensk was built by the decree of Tsar Feodor Ioanovich. In the XVII century. During the Russian-Polish wars, the fortress withstood three sieges, and in August 1812 the fortress walls stood a two-day assault and artillery shelling by the Napoleon army.
However, in the 1820's and 1930's years the wall was demolished into brick and stone to restore the buildings destroyed after the war. For today, fragments of the wall and 17 towers from the original 38 have been preserved.
