Landscape reserve «Yelnya»

Yelnya Landscape Reserve is a true natural masterpiece of Belarus, located in the very heart of the Miory District. It is the largest raised bog in the country and one of the most expansive lake-bog complexes in all of Europe. The total area of the reserve is 25,301 hectares, nearly 19,000 of which are covered by the Yelnya bog itself. Its unique ecological balance makes this area invaluable for science, environmental preservation, and tourism.

History

As early as 1968, the Yelnya area was designated a specially protected site as a Republican-level hydrological reserve. Almost 40 years later, in 2007, it was granted the new status of Republican Landscape Reserve. Since then, efforts to preserve the unique nature of Yelnya have only intensified. Over 400 species of vascular plants grow here, 13 of which are listed in the Red Book of Belarus. The fauna is equally impressive: over 120 bird species have been recorded, including 24 rare ones such as cranes, ospreys, and eagle owls. Among mammals, the European badger — a rare inhabitant of wetland areas — is of particular value.

The reserve holds several nature conservation statuses: since 2000 it has been designated an Important Bird Area, since 2002 it has been listed as a Ramsar site, and since 2005 it has been marked as a Key Botanical Area. The reserve contains 120 picturesque lakes and is the source of five rivers, including the Yelnyanka and the Grafsky Stream. The bog rises 130–145 meters above sea level, creating a mesmerizing landscape that seems to transport visitors into another world.

Excursions

You can explore the Yelnya Reserve as part of an individual excursion around the city or region, which we will gladly tailor to your preferences. The itinerary will consider your timing, interests, and comfort level. It may be a private trip with a guide, transport, photo stops, and optional visits in Miory or en route from Minsk. Booking a custom tour means discovering Yelnya in a way that’s uniquely yours — quiet, enchanting, and filled with the spirit of wild nature.

An excursion from Minsk to the Yelnya Landscape Reserve is a chance to witness the pristine nature of Belarus. The trip includes a visit to the ecological visitor center, where guests will find interactive exhibits, films, workshops, and educational activities. Especially popular is the 2.5 km eco-trail — a wooden path across the raised bog, offering breathtaking views. Observation decks and informative panels along the way make this walk both scenic and educational.

Nature lovers will especially enjoy watching cranes from the tower or in the fields, as well as observing black grouse during their mating dances in spring (April–May). This makes an excursion to Yelnya not just a walk — but a true immersion in vibrant, living nature.
