The Church of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary in Kobrin
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kobryn is an outstanding 19th-century architectural monument in the Classicist style and an important spiritual center of the region. It is located in the historical center of the town and surrounded by an old cemetery where notable figures, including Alexander Mickiewicz, are buried. This church is part of popular excursions across Belarus and is often included in itineraries for those choosing an excursion from Minsk. You can book a guided tour of the church and explore its history and atmosphere.
History
The history of the church dates back to the 16th century, when in 1513, by order of Grand Duke of Lithuania Sigismund and with the support of Princess Anna Semyonovna, the first wooden church was built. It suffered multiple fires and reconstructions over the years. The current building began construction in 1841 based on a design by architect Noskov, which was approved by prominent figures such as Charleman and Visconti. The church was built with parishioners’ donations and was consecrated in 1845. Over time, the church witnessed many historical events — from the Polish-Soviet war to World War II. After decades of closure and use for non-religious purposes, it was returned to the faithful in 1990 and restored with the support of a Polish construction company.
Architecture
The church is a three-nave rectangular building with a gable roof, characteristic of the Classicist style. Its façade is adorned with two towers, and the side walls feature pilasters and rectangular windows. Inside the church are three intricately carved altars, gilded or silvered, and unique icons, including images of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn and Saint Anthony. A 12-stop pipe organ stands out in the church’s musical section. The cemetery holds the memory of important individuals such as Alexander Mickiewicz and soldiers who died in 20th-century battles. The architectural complex also includes stone sculptures and a chapel.
