Church of the Blessed Trinity and the former convent of the missionaries in Lyskovo

Type: Katolik churches, Monasteries Date of Foundation: 1763 - 1785 yy Status: Republican value Republic of Belarus, Brest region, Pruzhany district, Lyskovo village

Among the many Belarusian churches that are in a semi-ruined state, Lyskava Church of the Holy Trinity stands out with its special atmosphere. Even decades after the cessation of services, life can still be felt here: fragments of interiors and colorful murals have been preserved within its walls. In winter, these picturesque frescoes contrast with the snow that forms drifts in the former altars. Despite all efforts to save the church, the process of destruction continues, but tourists choosing excursions in Belarus do not miss the opportunity to see this historical monument.

History of the Lyskava Church of the Holy Trinity

The history of the church dates back to the 17th century when a stone building was erected on the site of a wooden temple. In 1751, Father Jan Bykhavets invited missionary monks here, and soon a monastery complex was built. By the end of the 18th century, the monastery housed a hospital and a parish school for 120 students. However, in the 19th century, after Lyskava became part of the Russian Empire, the missionary order was banned, and the church was re-consecrated as an Orthodox temple. In 1880, the building suffered significant fire damage, but it was restored four years later. In the 20th century, the church became Catholic again, but after World War II, it was finally closed and fell into neglect.

Architecture and Spiritual Life of Lyskava Church of the Holy Trinity

The church is a striking example of late Baroque. According to researchers, its design may have been developed by the German architect Jan Samuel Becker, who worked in Ruzhany in the second half of the 18th century. This assumption is supported by the similarity of the Lyskava church to the Saints Peter and Paul Church in Ruzhany. The building is distinguished by its elongated silhouette, single-nave composition, and massive tower. Inside, picturesque murals, altar niches, and decorative elements have been preserved. Today, the church remains a monument of national significance, while the monastery building opposite is used as a rural hospital.
