Building of the Synagogue
The former synagogue building is an important architectural and cultural monument located in the historic Rakovskoye Suburb of Minsk. Today, it houses the Specialized Youth Olympic Reserve School for Chess and Checkers, but the structure still draws attention with its unique architecture and rich history. The site is included in popular tours around Belarus and is often part of a walking tour from Minsk through the old town.
History
The synagogue was built in 1864 with funds from merchant Zaltsman to serve the needs of the poor Jewish residents of Minsk. It functioned as a prayer house until the 1920s, when it was closed as part of the Soviet secularization policy. During the Nazi occupation, it housed the local commandant’s office and later a cinema. From 1944, the building became the first post-war cinema in Minsk — “Belarus”, and afterwards, the Pioneers' Palace.
Architecture
Although the building was significantly altered in the 20th century, original features of Jewish architecture remain. The semicircular windows on the first floor still reflect its original purpose. The later addition of a second floor changed the silhouette, giving it a more secular look. However, observant participants of tours from Minsk will spot the 19th-century features hidden beneath the later modifications. The building is a notable example of how religious structures have been adapted to new functions.
Tours
The former synagogue is featured in tours around Belarus and walking tours in Minsk, especially those exploring its historic districts — the Trinity and Rakovskoye suburbs. Visitors can learn about the history of the Jewish community and see a building that vividly illustrates the shifts in cultural and historical eras. It is highly recommended to book a tour that includes a visit to this site to explore its past, architecture, and cultural significance in the memory of the city.
