Church of Sacred Heart of Jesus
In the scenic village of Slobodka in northern Belarus stands the majestic Catholic church — Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This sacred place serves not only as a site of prayer but also as a vivid example of Neo-Romanesque architecture, holding great cultural and historical significance. The church is part of the Braslaw Deanery of the Vitebsk Diocese and is officially listed in the State Register of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus.
History
The current building of the church was constructed between 1903 and 1906, replacing an older structure from the early 19th century, which could no longer accommodate the growing number of parishioners. The sanctuary is known under two names: in secular sources it is often referred to as the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, while official Catholic documents in Belarus designate it as the Church of Divine Providence. During the difficult post-war years (1949–1953), the church was closed and repurposed as a grain storage facility. However, through the determination of the local community, the building was returned to the faithful and re-consecrated. The organ, heavily damaged during World War II, was not restored until 1999, when it once again filled the church with music.
Architecture
Built of brick and plastered, the church is designed as a basilica with three naves, a transept, and an apse. The architectural silhouette is defined by two symmetrical towers with pointed spires flanking the main façade. The central section projects slightly and is crowned by a double-sloped pediment. The exterior is enriched with elements of Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Gothic styles: rose windows, semicircular and round stained glass windows, some of which have survived to this day. Entrances are made as arched portals, and a broad stone staircase leads to the main entrance. Decorative buttresses, flying buttresses, and unique iron doors with plant motifs crafted by a local blacksmith complete the artistic ensemble.
