The Building of the Minsk Metro Administration is a landmark of the capital of Belarus, combining administrative, architectural, and cultural functions. It is located on Lenin Square, between the City Executive Committee and the main building of BSU, and also serves as an entrance to the "Ploshchad Lenina" metro station. This location is often included in city tours of Minsk, as it clearly reflects the spirit of Soviet architecture and key milestones in the development of the city’s infrastructure. Visitors to the capital are invited to explore this site as part of "Minsk city tours".

History

The history of the Minsk Metro began in the late 1960s, when the rapid growth of the city created the need for a new form of public transport. The first section of the metro opened in 1984, along with the monumental building of the Metro Administration. It became not only the administrative center of the system but also an architectural dominant of the district. Since then, the Minsk Metro has become an integral part of the city landscape and transport system, solving numerous logistical challenges and connecting different districts of the capital.

Architecture

One of the most impressive features of the building is a massive tower about 50 meters high, soaring above the metro entrance. It was designed as an architectural counterpart to the tower of the Red Church located opposite. At a height of 40 meters, the main clock of Belarus is installed, delivered from a factory near Yerevan — at that time the only manufacturer of tower clocks in the USSR. The tower is crowned with a wrought iron weather vane in the shape of a bison — the national symbol of Belarus. The decorative work was done by Belarusian craftsmen. During the last renovation, the first floor was adapted for commercial and service purposes, making the building even more open and attractive to visitors.

Excursions

The Building of the Minsk Metro Administration is located in the very heart of the city — on Independence Square, near iconic landmarks such as the Red Church and the Government House. This is where many bus and walking tours around Minsk begin, as well as thematic tours across Belarus, which are conveniently launched from the city center. Thanks to its prime location, the building is easily integrated into various tours from Minsk, especially those dedicated to Soviet architecture, transport history, or the cultural identity of the city.
Tourists who decide to book a tour with a guided visit to the center of Minsk can not only admire the monumental tower with the country’s main clock but also learn how the metro system works, what engineering solutions were used during construction, and why a bison-shaped weather vane was chosen as a symbolic detail. This spot makes a logical and fascinating starting point for exploring the city.
