Main Post Office is the central postal enterprise of Minsk, located on Independence Avenue. It was established in 1946 and still plays an important role in organizing the city's postal services. Here, you can send letters and parcels, use telegraph services, and access the Internet. The Main Post Office building is one of Minsk’s iconic architectural landmarks and is included in popular excursions around Belarus.

History of Creation

The construction of the current Main Post Office building took place between 1949 and 1953, based on the design of the renowned architect V. Korol. It became part of the large-scale reconstruction of Independence Avenue after the war. In 1962, the building was adorned with unique clocks that displayed the time in 50 cities worldwide. The chimes rang every 15 minutes, and once an hour, they played the melody "Radzima Maya Daragaya." In the 1970s, the clocks fell silent due to a ban on excessive city noise, but by the 1980 Olympics, they were updated: the number of cities was reduced to 35, and the inscriptions were changed to Belarusian.

Architecture of the Building

The Main Post Office building is a striking example of Stalinist classicism, featuring a monumental facade, massive columns, and decorative elements. The interior is also designed in a grand style, with stucco moldings, marble floors, and high ceilings. The entrance is adorned with massive doors, and the central hall impresses with its scale. This architectural masterpiece continues to attract tourists and is included in excursions around Minsk.
