Obelisk «Minsk-Hero City»

Type: Monuments Date of Foundation: 1985 year Status: Republican value Republic of Belarus, Minsk, Pobediteley Avenue

«Minsk — Hero City» Complex is one of the key monuments in Minsk, symbolizing the heroism and courage of the Belarusian people. This architectural and sculptural ensemble includes an obelisk and the bronze sculpture "Motherland". It is part of the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War. The complex is located on a hill at the beginning of the Museum and Park Complex "Victory", at the intersection of Pobediteley Avenue and Masherov Avenue.

Traditions and Celebrations at the Stele

Every year, on July 3, Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus, and on May 9, Victory Day, ceremonial events are held at the obelisk. This is the place to see festive parades, gala concerts, and impressive fireworks. The monument has become a favorite spot for newlyweds to leave flowers at the "Motherland" statue and take memorable photos.

Historical Background

Minsk endured hard times during the Great Patriotic War — 1,100 days of German occupation. After the city’s liberation, it took almost 30 years to achieve the title of "Hero City". Only on June 26, 1974, was Minsk awarded this honorary title, and on May 8, 1985, the architectural and sculptural complex was opened to mark the 40th anniversary of Victory.

Architecture of the Complex

The central element of the complex is a 45-meter-high obelisk adorned with a star and a gilded laurel branch. At its base, there is a marble plaque with the text of the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR awarding the title of "Hero City". Nearby stands the bronze sculpture "Motherland", symbolizing Victory and Glory.

Connection to the Museum of the Great Patriotic War

Architecturally and ideologically, the complex is connected to the new building of the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War. The rays of the museum’s central façade facing the obelisk symbolize the Victory salute, emphasizing the unity of the complex.

The Complex in Numismatics and Phaleristics

The image of the "Minsk — Hero City" obelisk is depicted on commemorative coins and jubilee medals. In 1997, the National Bank of Belarus issued a series of silver and copper-nickel coins dedicated to Independence Day. The complex is also featured on the jubilee medal "75 Years of the Liberation of Belarus from Nazi Invaders".
