Theatre of Yanka Kupala

Type: Objects of culture Date of Foundation: 1890 year Status: Regional value Republic of Belarus, Minsk sity, Engelsa, 7

History of the Theatre’s Creation

The building of the Yanka Kupala Theatre was constructed in 1890 with funds collected by the residents of Minsk, based on the design of architects Karol Kozlowski and Konstantin Uvedensky. The first performance staged there was titled “The Evil of the Day”.

In 1920, under the direction of Florian Zhdanovich, the Belarusian State Theatre was founded — a date considered the beginning of the history of the Kupala Theatre.

In 1944, after the famous production of “Pavlinka” by director Lev Litvinov, the theatre received the name of Yanka Kupala, the great Belarusian poet and playwright. In 1955, it was awarded the title of “Academic”, and in 1993 — the status of “National”.

Architecture of the Yanka Kupala Theatre Building

The original theatre building was distinguished by its elegance and the advanced engineering solutions of the late 19th century. It could accommodate up to 550 spectators.

Over the years, the exterior of the theatre changed many times: after fires, wars, and several reconstructions, it underwent numerous transformations.

The large-scale restoration of 2010–2013 aimed to recreate the exterior appearance of the 1890 building. Architects had to rely on archival photographs and eyewitness accounts, as no accurate blueprints had survived.

Although the interior was completely renovated, the theatre’s façade and stylistic elements preserved the spirit of the historical building.

Theatre Repertoire

The modern repertoire of the Yanka Kupala Theatre includes around 25 productions of various genres — from classic plays by Yanka Kupala and Yakub Kolas to works by contemporary authors.

Both dramas and comedies are performed on its stage, as well as experimental productions and interpretations of Belarusian and world classics. The theatre actively collaborates with leading playwrights, artists, and directors of the country.

Today, the Yanka Kupala Theatre remains a center of Belarusian theatrical culture. It hosts premieres, festivals, tours, and creative meetings. The theatre’s ensemble combines respect for national traditions with a constant search for new artistic forms and ideas.

After restoration, the theatre is equipped with modern technical facilities, allowing it to stage performances at the level of Europe’s leading theatres.

Excursions with Backstage Access

For those who wish to immerse themselves in the theatrical atmosphere, a special tour with backstage access to the Yanka Kupala Theatre is organized. Experienced guides and theatre staff share fascinating stories about the lives of actors, premieres, and backstage traditions formed over more than a century of the theatre’s existence.

As part of an individual excursion from Minsk, it is possible to include an external viewing of the Yanka Kupala Theatre — one of the most recognizable symbols of the Belarusian capital.

During a stop near this magnificent building, the guide will tell you about its creation, outstanding actors, and legendary productions that have brought fame to the theatre throughout the country.

Special attention is given to the theatre’s architecture: its elegant classical façade, harmonious lines, and refined details that carefully preserve the atmosphere of old Minsk.
