Central Children Gorky Park

Type: Parks, squares, Sports-entertaining objects Date of Foundation: 1805 year Status: Regional value Republic of Belarus, Minsk

Central Children's Park named after Maxim Gorky is one of the oldest and most beloved parks in Minsk, located in a picturesque area near the Svisloch River. It covers an area of 28 hectares and is known for its variety of attractions, green alleys, rare tree species, and cozy atmosphere. The park is especially popular among families with children due to its wide range of entertainment for all ages. It harmoniously combines historical heritage, natural beauty, and modern recreational infrastructure.

History

The park's history dates back to 1805, when the first governor of Minsk, Zakhar Artemyevich Korneev, established the Governor's Garden — the first public recreation space in Belarus. Since then, the park has undergone many transformations: by the late 19th century, it featured sports grounds, a cycling track, and courts for lawn tennis. After the revolution, the park was renamed «Profintern», and since 1936 it has borne the name of Maxim Gorky. In the postwar period, the park was expanded and renovated: zones for children were added, along with a stadium, summer cinema, and later — a planetarium and observatory. In 1960, the park officially became a children's park, and in 1976 the famous ice palace was opened.

Modern Features and Entertainment

Today, the park offers a wide range of attractions: from children's swings, trampolines, and a house of horrors and laughter — to a 54-meter-high Ferris wheel with a breathtaking panoramic view of Minsk. Visitors can take a ride on a park train, rent a boat or a catamaran, and enjoy a peaceful journey along the Svisloch River. Squirrels roam the pathways, and ducks swim in the ponds — many of them are eager to be fed. The park is adorned with retro-style lanterns, comfortable benches, and well-kept walkways. Since 2003, it has been a smoke-free zone, making it especially pleasant for families with children.
