The Monument to Yakub Kolas in Minsk is a sculpture ensemble installed in 1972 on Yakub Kolas Square, dedicated to the national poet of Belarus. The composition includes a central statue of the writer and two groups of characters from his literary works.
History
The monument was unveiled on November 3, 1972, to mark the 90th anniversary of Yakub Kolas’s birth. It is located on the square formerly known as Komarovskaya, which was renamed in honor of the poet in 1956. The monument was created by sculptor Zair Azgur and architects Yury Gradov, Heorhiy Zaborski, and Lev Levin.
Architecture
The monumental composition consists of three sculptural groups:
- Central figure: a bronze statue of Yakub Kolas 8 meters tall, portraying the poet in a thoughtful pose, seated with a coat draped over his shoulders.
- Left group: characters from the poem "Symon the Musician" — Symon with a violin and Ganka, a girl listening to his playing.
- Right group: characters from the novella "Dryhva" — Grandfather Talash and his son Panas, shown in a moment of tense anticipation.
The sculptures are placed in a square surrounded by birches and fir trees, with fountains on both sides stylized as rye ears.
