Kalvariyskoye cemetery in Minsk
Kalvaryja Cemetery is the oldest surviving cemetery in Minsk, recognized as a monument of architecture and history. It features unique examples of sacred architecture representing a variety of styles — from Classicism and Neo-Gothic to Art Nouveau. Today, the cemetery is protected by the state as a site of international significance and is an important part of the cultural heritage of the Belarusian capital.
History
The exact founding date of Kalvaryja Cemetery is unknown, but its history dates back to the 18th century. Initially, it served as a burial site for wealthy Catholics and later became multi-confessional. In 1830, the territory was enclosed by a stone fence and adorned with a grand entrance gate in the Empire style. Between 1839 and 1841, a stone Kalvaryja Church in Neo-Gothic style was built on the site of a previous wooden church. The church remained the only functioning Catholic church in Minsk even after the revolution, up until the late 1930s.
During World War II, both the cemetery and the church survived. In 1945, the cemetery was expanded to 14 hectares. In the 1960s, there were plans to demolish the complex to construct a new highway, but under public pressure, the project was altered. In 1980, the church was returned to the Catholic community.
