Millennium Monument of Brest

Type: Monuments Date of Foundation: 2009 year Status: Republican value Republic of Belarus, Brest, Sovetskaya Street, 53

General Information

The Thousandth Anniversary of Brest Monument is located in the historic center of the city, at the intersection of Sovetskaya and Gogol Streets. It was solemnly unveiled in 2009 to mark the 990th anniversary of Brest — ten years before the millennium celebration. The monument was made possible through donations from city residents and funding from the municipal authorities. The authors of the monument are architect Alexey Andreyuk and sculptor Alexey Pavlyuchuk. The total height of the monument is 15 meters. In 2011, the composition was complemented by an Art Nouveau-style wrought-iron fence, completing the architectural ensemble.

Conceptual Idea

The monument is conceived as a collective image of the city, embodied in historical figures and symbolic characters. The monument is crowned by a Guardian Angel with a cross and a shield — the protector of Brest. Below are sculptural depictions of real historical figures associated with the city's history: Prince Vladimir Vasilkovich, Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas, and the 16th-century statesman Nicholas Radziwill the Black. The composition is completed by generalized images of Brest's residents — the Chronicler, the Soldier, and the Mother.

High Relief and Historical Themes

A high relief with a total area of 11 m² runs around the base of the monument, depicting six key episodes from the history of Berestye — the ancient name of Brest. The first episode is dedicated to the legend of the city's founding: according to tradition, a merchant who could not cross a swamp made himself a raft from birch bark, then founded a city on that site and named it Berestye. Other episodes reflect the construction of Berestye, the participation of Berestye residents in the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, the publication of the Berestye Bible, the heroic defense of the Brest Fortress in 1941, and space exploration — the last theme is connected with Pyotr Klimuk, a native of the Brest district who became the first Belarusian cosmonaut. At the foot of the monument, there are 12 chronological plaques in the form of symbolic clocks, which reflect key events in the history of Brest.

Interesting Fact

The opening of the monument was accompanied by a minor mishap: a total of 75 spelling inaccuracies were found in the inscriptions on the monument. The plaques had to be removed and reinstalled after the errors were corrected. The ensemble acquired its final appearance in 2011 with the installation of the wrought-iron fence.
