The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, also known as Malomozheykovskaya Church, is an outstanding example of Gothic-Renaissance defensive architecture. This historic temple is located in the village of Murovanka, Shchuchin District, Grodno Region. Tourists choosing tours around Belarus can visit this unique monument, which has preserved its authenticity through the centuries.

Construction History and First Owners

It was previously believed that the church was built in 1407, but later research showed that construction took place between 1516 and 1542, financed by local landowner Shimko. Later, the Vilnius subchamberlain Shimko Matskevich-Shklyonsky donated part of the income from his estate for the maintenance of the church. A tour from Minsk to these places will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of Belarusian history and architectural heritage.

Historical Memorial Plaques

Inside the church, visitors can see two marble plaques with inscriptions testifying to its restoration. One is dedicated to Shimko-Maska Lundzilovich, and the other was installed by Kazimir Kostrovitsky. Both plaques are of interest to those who embark on tours around Belarus to explore history and culture.

The Church in Wars and Destruction

Over the centuries, the church was attacked multiple times. In 1657, during the Russo-Polish War, it was ravaged, and in the early 18th century, it suffered from artillery shelling by the troops of Charles XII. The cannonball marks on the walls confirm that the church was repeatedly a battlefield. Historical documents about the church were lost at the end of the 18th century.

The Russian Empire Period

After Grodno Region became part of the Russian Empire in 1795, the church was inspected by Emperor Alexander I, who ordered its renovation. However, the work began only five years later. In the 19th century, a parish school operated at the church, making this site interesting not only from an architectural perspective but also as a cultural heritage monument.
