The Complex of the Horki Agricultural Academy is one of the most significant historical and architectural landmarks in the Mogilev region and a unique site for excursions in Belarus. It includes not only the main building, but also a botanical garden, arboretum, educational and residential buildings, forming a unified ensemble of educational and cultural importance. Today, the academy is the largest agricultural educational institution in the country.

History

The history of the complex begins in 1836, when, by order of the imperial government, an agricultural school was established in Horki. In 1848, it was granted the status of an institute and became the first higher agricultural educational institution on the territory of present-day Belarus. After the 1863 uprising, the institute was temporarily moved to Saint Petersburg, but in 1919 it was re-established in Horki. Since then, the academy has been continuously developing and training professionals in the agricultural sector — with over 80,000 graduates throughout its history. Among them is the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko.

Architecture

The complex of the Agricultural Academy is a monument of 19th – early 20th century architecture. The main building was constructed in the 1830s in the classical style, designed by the renowned Italian architect Angelo Campioni. The ensemble also includes buildings in eclectic and Art Nouveau styles: academic and administrative buildings, a greenhouse, bathhouse, workshops, a peasant hospital, and other structures. At various times, the complex included up to 35 buildings, creating a harmonious architectural environment that reflects the era and the academy’s role as a center of science and education.

Excursions

Today, visitors to Horki can book a guided tour of the academy’s main building, where historical interiors have been preserved, and stroll through the botanical garden and arboretum, founded during the time of the agricultural school. Excursions from Minsk to Horki offer an opportunity to immerse oneself in the academic past, learn about the development of agricultural education, and explore the region's history. This site is ideal for thematic tours and educational trips, appealing to both adults and school groups eager to deepen their knowledge of Belarusian history and scientific achievements.
