Holy Resurrection Church — an Orthodox church located in the center of Oshmyany, Grodno Region. Together with the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, it forms the unique historical appearance of the town square. This church is an important landmark that attracts tourists and pilgrims.

History of the Holy Resurrection Church

The church was built on the site of a dismantled Dominican temple. Permission for construction was granted on March 7, 1873, and the project by architect Nikolai Chagin was approved in 1875. Construction began in September 1873 and was completed in August 1883. The official consecration took place on September 4, 1883, by Archbishop Alexander of Lithuania and Vilnius.

Development and Closure of the Church

In 1894, the church received 600 rubles for development according to the will of P. I. Medintsova. In 1934, the church's priest became the well-known Belarusian diaspora religious figure Nikolai Lapitsky. However, in 1964, the church was closed, and its activities were resumed only in February 1992. In the summer of 2001, a chapel dedicated to the 2000th anniversary of Christianity was solemnly opened next to the church. The ceremony was attended by Bishop Guriy of Novogrudok and Lida.

Architectural Features

The Holy Resurrection Church is built in the Russian-Byzantine style and represents a cross-domed church. The central octagonal light drum is crowned with a tented roof and a convex dome. Above the narthex rises an octagonal tented bell tower. The porch wings have gabled roofs, while the facades are decorated with ornamental elements.

Decor and Interior

The main and side entrances are adorned with monumental portals with elongated arches. The architectural symmetry is emphasized by arched window openings and large semicircular friezes. The interior is dominated by a spacious two-tiered area, creating an atmosphere of grandeur and harmony.

The Holy Resurrection Church in Oshmyany is not only a historical and religious center but also a significant architectural landmark of Belarus. Tourists and pilgrims can visit the church to admire its unique architecture and spiritual atmosphere.
