St. Andrew s Church in Naroch

St. Andrew the Apostle Church is a unique landmark of Narach village. The Church of St. Andrew the Apostle in Narach (Minsk Region) is a striking example of Neo-Gothic architecture built between 1897 and 1901. History of the Church: From Ancient Charters to a Stone Temple

The history of the church dates back to the 15th century, as evidenced by documents from ancient Lithuanian charters. In the mid-17th century, a wooden church stood on this site, built with the support of Prince Svirsky. Later, in 1746, the church was reconstructed with funds from Ashmyany Castellan Martin Oskerko and became one of the largest sanctuaries in the region. However, the wooden building was damaged by fire in 1862 and was restored by the efforts of Pastor Ludwig Minsky.

Architectural Features and Interior

The modern Church of St. Andrew the Apostle was built of red brick and consecrated in 1901. The facade is decorated with a rose window and four towers with crosses. Inside, visitors can admire carved wooden altars, ancient icons, and a 1902 organ. The main altar is crowned by an icon of the Virgin Mary in a silver frame with gilded elements.

The Church During Wars and Repressions

The events of World War I left their mark on the church's history. The building was used as a shelter for the wounded and a place of prayer for both locals and German soldiers. During World War II, Father Kazimir Pavlovich was tortured to death by Soviet partisans for blessing the battle flag of the Polish partisan brigade "Kmicic." Later, during the Soviet period, the church was closed, but believers continued to gather there for prayer.

St. Andrew's Church Today: Monuments and Important Events

With the collapse of the USSR, the church was returned to believers. In 2004, the church solemnly celebrated the 100th anniversary of its consecration. In 2008, a monument to Pope John Paul II, the eighth in Belarus, was erected near the church. In 2019, a memorial plaque appeared in the church in honor of Maria Kaczyńska, the wife of the President of Poland, who was baptized here in 1942.
