The Square of Liberty in Brest
Liberty Square is one of the most recognizable historical landmarks in the center of Brest, preserving the charm of past eras. Cozy and compact, it has a triangular shape and is mostly built up with two-story houses, many of which date back to the 19th and early 20th centuries. A green square stretches along the perimeter, creating a peaceful atmosphere in the very heart of the bustling city. This place harmoniously combines old architecture, the memory of a heroic past, and modern urban life. History
The history of Liberty Square goes back to the pre-revolutionary period when it served as the administrative center of Brest-Litovsk as part of the Russian Empire. Over the years, it bore different names: Duma Square, Town Hall Square, Piłsudski Square, and Marshalplatz. The city council, town hall, reading library, bakeries, and even the Society for the Protection of Animals were located here. In 1965, a commemorative stele was installed on the square in honor of the soldiers of the 1st Belorussian Front, who liberated the city on July 28, 1944. Since then, memorial events have been held here annually, including on Independence Day and Brest City Day. This place has become a symbol of freedom, heroism, and historical continuity.
Architecture
The architectural appearance of the square was formed mainly in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Polish and Russian architectural styles prevail here, clearly reflected in the facades of the two-story buildings. One of the now-lost buildings, located at the corner of what is now Budyonny Street, once amazed passersby with its exquisite architecture: lacy balconies and ornate window frames gave it a special charm. Today, the square preserves its historical features, complemented by a landscaped park and the commemorative stele in the center. The modern paving and well-kept greenery highlight the city's respectful attitude toward its past.
