Church of St. George in Pershai

Type: Katolik churches, Pilgrimage places Date of Foundation: 1933 year Status: Regional value Republic of Belarus, Minsk, Volozhin district, Pershai, on the center of village

St. George's Church in Pershai is one of the most expressive Catholic churches in western Belarus, built in the 1930s. Today, it holds not only architectural but also significant spiritual value, serving as a place of memory, prayer, and pilgrimage. Located in the cozy village of Pershai, Volozhin district, the church is listed in the State Register of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus.

History

The church was founded in 1933, when this region was part of Poland. The funds for its construction were provided by Count Benedikt Tyszkiewicz. Two years later, in 1935, the church was solemnly consecrated by Bishop Kazimierz Bukraba. However, the history of the church is full of dramatic events. Its first rector was Father Petrash, who supervised the construction and later had to leave the parish due to persecution by the Soviet authorities. His successors — Father Achilles and his assistant, Vicar Father Herman — became victims of Nazi reprisals and were burned alive with parishioners for allegedly aiding partisans. In 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified both priests.

Architecture

St. George's Church is a three-nave building with a striking silhouette. The main structure is rectangular and topped with a gable roof, with a semicircular apse attached. The nave is covered with a flat ceiling, while the apse features a conch with lunettes. The main facade is marked by a risalit with a double-sloped shield, and massive towers with a bell tower rise on each side. The territory around the church is well-maintained, and the building is enclosed by a stone fence, emphasizing the sanctuary’s significance.
