Kirov Bridge
Kirovsky Bridge is one of the main bridges in the city of Vitebsk, located in the central part of the city and spanning the Western Dvina River. It connects Kirov Street on the right bank with Zamkovaya Street on the left. The total length of the structure is 236 meters. The bridge not only serves as a vital transport link but also stands as a significant architectural and historical landmark of Vitebsk.
History
The history of bridges in this area goes back centuries. Originally, there was a wooden bridge here, repeatedly destroyed by floods and wars. After the Great Patriotic War, it was decided to build a new permanent bridge. Construction dragged on for years, and local newspapers published satirical articles — authors joked about the stylized "snail" at the entrance to the bridge as a symbol of the delayed construction. The bridge was finally inaugurated in 1955 with the participation of Bridge Train No. 423. The new structure was named Kirovsky in honor of S.M. Kirov, a prominent Soviet statesman.
Architecture
The bridge was designed by the «Soyuzdorpromproject» and «Belgospromproject» institutes. Engineers I. Gelfman and P. Isachenko, as well as architects O. Ladygina and E. Zaslavsky, contributed to the project. The structure is a monumental concrete bridge with distinct elements of post-war architectural style. In the early 21st century, the bridge underwent major renovations: in 2004–2005, sidewalks were widened, the road surface was replaced, and decorative columns, flowerbeds, and street lamps were added.
