Area of the 1000th anniversary
The 1000th Anniversary Square is not just one of the central locations in Vitebsk but a true symbol of its centuries-old history. Located on the picturesque high bank of the Western Dvina River, it offers breathtaking views of the old town, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in an atmosphere of timelessness. Spacious, well-maintained, and rich in architectural features, the square has become an integral part of the cityscape and a popular spot for walks, photo sessions, and, of course, excursions across Belarus.
History
From the 14th to the 18th century, the site of the present-day square was home to the Lower Castle — a key defensive and administrative center of Vitebsk. In the 1950s, the area was transformed into a square and initially named Theatrical Square. In 1974, on the occasion of the city's millennium, it was renamed the 1000th Anniversary Square. On December 22, 2000, a commemorative sign was erected here, celebrating the city's past and leaving a message for future generations.
Architecture
The square harmoniously blends historical and spiritual heritage. Its architectural ensemble is adorned by the Annunciation Church — one of the oldest temples in Belarus — and the Church of Saint Prince Alexander Nevsky, filled with grandeur and tranquility. The nearby Pushkin Park with its cozy alleys and the Kirov Bridge over the Dvina add a picturesque and romantic touch to the area. Together, they make the square a unique place where history intertwines with modern urban life.
