Church of St. Nicholas in Postavy
The St. Nicholas Cathedral in Pastavy is a prominent Orthodox church in the Vitebsk Region, located in the town of Pastavy. Built in 1894, it is a monument of Russian-style architecture and one of the most important religious landmarks in Belarus.
History
The history of the Church of St. Nicholas in Pastavy dates back to 1628, when a wooden church was first mentioned on this site. After a fire in 1815 and temporary services held in a private home, the new stone cathedral in Pastavy was built between 1891 and 1894 thanks to donations from local residents and Countess Maria Pshezdetskaya. The church was consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker — the patron saint of travelers and protector of the faithful.
The St. Nicholas Cathedral in Pastavy was never closed or significantly damaged during the wars. Even during the Second World War, the church remained open, although the German occupying forces reportedly took its bells. Nevertheless, services continued, and the church remained a spiritual center for the local community. In the postwar years, the cathedral was also never shut down and continued to function despite the challenges faced by religious institutions.
Architecture
The Church of St. Nicholas in Pastavy was built in the Russian Revival style of the late 19th century. It features a five-dome composition, a tented bell tower, and rich decorative elements: kokoshniks, dentil cornices, and arched windows with carved frames. Inside the church is a gilded iconostasis created according to Orthodox canons. The cathedral’s architectural image blends harmoniously with the urban landscape of Pastavy.

The St. Nicholas Cathedral in Pastavy is a spiritual center for the region, as well as a tourist and cultural attraction of the Vitebsk Region. It draws pilgrims, researchers, and architecture enthusiasts interested in Belarusian Orthodox churches. The cathedral also hosts festivals, religious processions, and church events.
