Alexander Nevsky Church in Mstislavl
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Mstislavl — one of the main architectural landmarks of the city, which can be visited during an excursion in Belarus. This magnificent Orthodox church, located at 30 Lenin Street, is an example of the retrospective Russian style. Its domes rise above the central part of the city, opposite the city square, making it the highest point in Mstislavl.
History
The history of the cathedral is linked to the fire of 1858, which destroyed the buildings of the Bernardine monastery. Only in 1878, thanks to donations from parishioners and state funds, was the current church built on the remains of the stone structures. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a cross-domed church with three apses, richly decorated portals, and arcature friezes. It is surrounded by a decorative brick fence with an arched entrance, above which rises a small tower with domes.
After the revolution, the church, like many others in Belarus, was closed and repurposed — first as a sports hall and later as a vegetable storage facility. However, its historical appearance was preserved, and in 1989, the cathedral was re-consecrated. Today, the Alexander Nevsky Church in Mstislavl houses two significant relics — the Tupichevskaya and Iveron icons of the Mother of God.
Architecture
The architectural features of the cathedral make it a striking example of religious architecture. Its composition includes a two-tiered bell tower with a faceted dome, an octagonal light drum, and three rounded apses. The facades are adorned with arched windows, cornices, and pilasters. Beautiful brick gates with cast-iron openwork grilles add grandeur to the ensemble.
