Memorial complex on spot of the Battle Milovidskoy insurgents 1863
The Memorial Complex at the Site of the Milavidy Battle of 1863 is located near the village of Milavidy in the Baranovichi District of the Brest Region. It commemorates the armed clash that took place on May 22 (June 3, New Style), 1863, during the 1863–1864 uprising, known as the January Uprising. The battle near Milavidy is considered one of the largest on the territory of modern-day Belarus.
History
The insurgent unit led by Alexander Lenkevich, supported by allies of Kastus Kalinouski, took a fortified position in the forest near the village of Milavidy. Regular troops of the Russian Empire, including artillery, were sent against them. Despite the numerical and technical superiority of the tsarist army, the rebels managed to hold their positions and inflict losses on the enemy.
Design and Features
The memorial complex includes several commemorative objects established in different years. In 1913, an Orthodox cross was erected. In 1933, the Polish community built a Neoclassical chapel rotunda. In 1993, a commemorative stone with a memorial plaque was installed. The area is landscaped, with paths, benches, and informational stands.
Cultural and Historical Significance
The complex reflects the historical importance of the events of 1863 and symbolizes the memory of the struggle for freedom. In 2016, the chapel-rotunda was granted the status of a historical and cultural monument of national importance. The memorial serves as an important site for preserving and studying the national liberation movement in Belarus.
