Brief Biography of A. V. Suvorov

Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov was one of Russia’s greatest military leaders, holding the titles of Generalissimo (1799), Count of Rymnik (1789), and Prince of Italy (1799). He participated in the first Russo-Turkish War and in suppressing Pugachev’s rebellion. During the second Russo-Turkish War, as a general, Suvorov achieved remarkable victories at Kinburn (1787) and Ochakov (1788) and stormed the fortress of Izmail during the Bessarabian campaign.

In 1794, he led the suppression of the uprising, defeating Kosciuszko’s army at the Battle of Maciejowice and capturing Warsaw after a bloody assault on Prague. After the death of Catherine II, he fell into disgrace under Paul I, but in 1799 he was recalled to service and sent to Italy. There, in less than five months, he drove the French troops out of Northern Italy. Later, attempting to cross the Alps to aid Rimsky-Korsakov, who was struggling against Masséna near Zurich, he arrived too late and was forced to retreat. Upon returning to Russia, Suvorov passed away on May 18, 1800.

First Bust of Suvorov at the Military History Museum

This museum is located in the house where the commander once lived, and its exhibition is dedicated to Suvorov’s life and military achievements. The bust is made of bronze, and its author is sculptor P. Kyuferle.

The second bust of the legendary commander was erected in 1950 at the end of an alley in Suvorov Park. It is located on the site where Suvorov’s house originally stood. The sculptor of this monument was A. I. Rukavishnikov. This bust is an important part of the city’s historical and cultural heritage.

Full-Length Monument to Suvorov

The monumental statue of Suvorov in full height was installed in 1964 at the intersection of Sovetskaya and Pushkin Streets. The sculptor of the monument is V. S. Chebotaryov. The statue is placed on a tall, four-sided pedestal. Suvorov is depicted facing west, with one hand resting on his sword and the other pointing forward. A plaque on the pedestal bears the inscription: "A. V. Suvorov. 1730–1800".
