Type: Monasteries Style: Baroque Date of Foundation: 17 century Status: Republican value Republic of Belarus, Brest region., Kobrin

Kobryn Spassky Monastery is an active women’s Orthodox monastery located in the center of Kobryn, Brest Region. It occupies the building of a former male monastery dating back to the 16th century, which had long been used for administrative purposes before being returned to the Church in 2010. Today, monastic life is being revived here, regular services are held, and pilgrims come to venerate the revered copy of the icon of the Mother of God «She Who is Quick to Hear». The monastery attracts not only the faithful but also those interested in history and architecture. It is included in the itineraries of excursions across Belarus, and visitors can book a guided tour of the church buildings, memorial plaques, and learn about the fate of the monastery during periods of war, reform, and revival.

History

The history of the Kobryn Spassky Monastery dates back to the 16th century. Its founder is believed to be the last prince of Kobryn, Ivan Semyonovich. In its early decades, the monastery received significant donations from the princely family, including land, mills, and other assets. Despite challenges such as the conversion of some nobility to Catholicism and attempts to confiscate its property, the monastery retained its holdings and influence. In the 17th century, it became a powerful spiritual and economic center. After the Union of Brest in 1596, the monastery joined the Uniate Church, and in 1839 it was closed. Throughout the 20th century, the building served various functions — from a courthouse to a police station. However, in 2010 the monastery was returned to the Orthodox Church, and a women’s convent was re-established within its walls.

Architecture

The architectural appearance of the monastery complex belongs to the Baroque style. The main building is a two-story brick structure of rectangular shape with an expressive facade adorned with risalits, stucco, pilasters, and decorative panels. In the past, it housed a monastery church, a refectory, and living quarters. The floors have beam ceilings, and the basement features a cylindrical vaulted ceiling. The internal layout has been partially lost, but restoration work is underway following the return of the property to the Church. Two memorial plaques are installed on the facade — one commemorating the victory in the Patriotic War of 1812, and another in memory of police officers.
