Church of Nicholas in Shereshevo
St. Nicholas Church in Shereshevo is a significant Orthodox church located in the agrotown of Shereshevo, Pruzhany District, Brest Region. Built of brick in 1872, the church remains active to this day and serves as an important monument of spiritual and architectural heritage. The uniqueness of the building lies not only in its style but also in the collective effort of the local community during its construction. Today, the church is considered one of the gems of the region and is available for viewing as part of tours around Belarus.
History
The construction of the stone church in honor of St. Nicholas began in 1872 and was a landmark event for the local residents. The state allocated 13,000 rubles for the construction, but the parishioners also made a significant contribution. Archival records of donations have been preserved — from valuable icons to church furnishings. The locals even built their own brick factory to supply materials. The new church was consecrated on November 8, 1873, in a solemn ceremony attended by clergy, officials, and students of local schools. The church was never closed during the Soviet period, making it a rare example of uninterrupted religious tradition.
Architecture
The church was designed by architect I.M. Fordon in the style of "national romanticism," which was popular in the second half of the 19th century. This longitudinally oriented four-part structure includes a bell tower, refectory, prayer hall, and apse. The composition is complemented by a sacristy that adds asymmetry. The church architecture combines elements of Old Russian style: zakomaras, niches, arches, facade portals, and graceful onion domes crowning the bell tower and main dome. These features give the church a distinct and recognizable silhouette, especially striking against the surrounding landscape.
