Park Mankovichi

Type: Parks, squares Date of Foundation: 1885 year Status: Republican value The Republic of Belarus, Brest region., Stolin

Mankovichi Park is a scenic corner of Polesia, protected as a natural monument of national importance. Located near the town of Stolin, it offers visitors a unique blend of landscape beauty, historical significance, and biodiversity. Perched on a high terrace above the old riverbed of the Horyn, the park captivates with its rare tree species, shaded alleys, and serene aristocratic atmosphere.

History

The park’s history is closely tied to the prominent Radziwill princely family. In the 16th century, under Mikołaj "the Black" Radziwiłł, the Davyd-Haradok Ordination was established, though it lacked a residence until the 19th century. In 1885, Princess Maria Dorota de Castellane, wife of Antoni Radziwiłł, laid the foundation of the estate in Mankovichi. Inspired by the Old Park in Nesvizh, the landscape featured romantic and classical elements. At its center stood a Neo-Baroque palace designed by German architect Wenzel for Stanisław Radziwiłł, an adjutant of Józef Piłsudski.

After the prince’s death, the estate passed to Karol Radziwiłł, an avid hunter, and became a gathering place for European aristocracy. In 1943, the palace was destroyed by fire, and retreating German troops removed decorative elements, including the original cast-iron gates. Yet, the park endures, impressing visitors with its preserved design and approximately 35 species of rare introduced plants.

Excursions

The park is open to visitors and features in many themed tours across Polesia. The Stolin Local History Museum operates here, offering deeper insight into the history of the Pahorynnia region and the Radziwill estate. Other highlights include a memorial stone to the park’s founder, sacred boulders, and wrought-iron gates transferred from the Novo-Berezhnoye estate.

You can explore the park in depth with a private guided tour that we can tailor to your request. It can be a standalone trip from Minsk to Mankovichi Park or part of a broader program including a visit to Stolin or other Radziwill heritage sites. This tour is an excellent choice for those passionate about history, architecture, and nature.
