Church of Holy Transfiguration in Chashniki
The Transfiguration Church in Chashniki is a monument of Orthodox architecture in the Classical style, located in the town of Chashniki, Vitebsk Region. Built between 1843 and 1845 with funding from Ignaty Volodkovich, the church is an active parish and an important spiritual center of the region.
History
The construction of the Transfiguration Church was completed in 1845, funded by Ignaty Volodkovich. In the 1930s, the church was closed and repurposed as a warehouse. During World War II, it was reopened, and Sunday services were held — initially for the occupiers, later for local residents. After the liberation of the area, the church remained open, though services were mostly held in secret. In the 1980s, Anatoly Koleda, a candidate of physical and mathematical sciences who later received a theological education in Zagorsk, became the rector. He later served in Germany, where he opened several Orthodox churches.
Architecture
The church in Chashniki is a plastered and light-colored brick building. Its main western façade features a four-column Doric portico. The central volume is topped by a large drum with a hemispherical dome. Above the vestibule rises a bell tower with arched openings, crowned by an octagonal spire. The interior is decorated with frescoes depicting Gospel scenes, figures of apostles, evangelists, and God the Father. Valuable icons from the 18th–19th centuries are preserved inside, including “Theotokos Hodegetria” and “The Baptism.” A highlight of the church is the bell tower housing five antique bells bearing the names of their makers.
Cultural and Historical Significance
The Transfiguration Church in Chashniki is of interest as an example of 19th-century religious architecture. Some frescoes and several 18th–19th-century icons have survived. Throughout its history, the church has been opened, closed, and repurposed. However, since the late 20th century, it has gradually regained its original function. Today, the church is among the culturally significant sites of the Vitebsk Region.
