Monastery of Basilian in Tolochin

Type: Monasteries Style: Baroque Date of Foundation: 1 century Status: Republican value Republic of Belarus, Vitebsk region, Tolochin, Lenina st.

The Pokrovsky Monastery is one of the oldest Orthodox monasteries in Tolochin. Its history dates back to 1604, when a monastery was founded near the Holy Protection Church. The church was built by Lew Sapieha, Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and became an important spiritual center for the region. The cathedral church, now considered a monument of Vilnius Baroque, was consecrated in 1769. During the Soviet period, most of the monastery buildings were transferred to the military registration and enlistment office and the private security service. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the monastery began its revival in 1996, when the former residential building was transferred to the parish. In 2004, the monastery was officially revived by a decision of the Holy Synod of the Belarusian Orthodox Church, marking a new beginning in its history.

The Pokrovsky Monastery is renowned for its Vilnius Baroque architecture. The main church, the Holy Protection Cathedral, is deservedly considered one of the most beautiful examples of this style. The cathedral is distinguished by its elegance, rich decorative elements, and traditional appearance. Recent restoration work in the former residential building includes the restoration of cells, the installation of a dome, and interior renovations. A key feature is the ancient icon of the Resurrection of Christ, which is housed in the monastery, as well as historical monuments related to the monastery's rich history.

The monastery is a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims. Services are held inside the monastery, and a Sunday school operates there. Particularly attractive for tourists is the opportunity to see the restoration work, as well as admire the unique ancient icon and Baroque architectural monuments.
