Monument in honor to Komsomolsk underground in Obol
The Monument in Honor of the Obol Komsomol Underground is a historical memorial located in the urban settlement of Obol, Shumilinsky District, Vitebsk Region, Belarus. It is dedicated to the heroic activities of the underground Komsomol organization "Young Avengers," which fought against the fascist invaders during World War II.
"Young Avengers": The Fight for Freedom
The secret Komsomol organization operated from early 1942 to August 1943. Around 40 young men and women from Obol and nearby villages – Ushaly, Zui, Mostishche, and Ferma – joined its ranks. The organization was established on the initiative of the Sirotinsky underground district committees of the CP(B)B and LKSMB and actively fought against the occupiers.
In June 1942, the Komsomol committee was elected, consisting of: E. Zenkova (secretary), M. Dementyeva, V. Ezavitov, I. Ezavitov, E. Ezavitov, M. Luzgina, Z. Portnova, N. Azolina, and V. Shashkova. Their feats became a significant part of Soviet youth resistance against Nazi occupation.
Sabotage and Intelligence: The Exploits of the Underground Fighters
During its existence, the organization carried out 21 acts of sabotage, including the destruction of a water pump, three locomotives, several railway convoys, the burning of a flax factory, multiple bridges, and the elimination of about ten enemy vehicles. The underground fighters obtained and supplied weapons and medicine to the partisans, gathered intelligence on enemy troop locations, and distributed leaflets and propaganda materials.
By the summer of 1943, the organization had grown to 38 members and was divided into three groups: Obol, Mostishche, and Ushaly. Their actions made a significant contribution to the fight against occupation and inspired many to resist.
Heroes Forever Engraved in History
For their courage and bravery during the war, many members of the organization were awarded orders and medals. Special recognition was given to E. S. Zenkova and Z. M. Portnova, who were honored with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
A Memorial That Reminds of the Feat
In 1968, near the Gorodok – Nevel highway, a monument was erected in honor of the "Young Avengers." It was created by sculptor Ya. A. Pechkin. The monument consists of a 6-meter-high concrete stele featuring a four-figure relief depicting young men and women in profile. The expressive lines, conveying determination and anger, emphasize the strength of spirit of the youth who stood up to defend their homeland.
This monument is a tribute to the young heroes who selflessly fought for the freedom of their land. Today, it stands as an important landmark for those interested in history and the patriotic heritage of Belarus.
