The Assumption Church in Charetyanka is a 19th-century monument of Orthodox architecture located in the agro-town of Charetyanka, Gomel District, Gomel Region. Built between 1865 and 1868, the church is an active place of worship and is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Belarus.

History

The first church in Charetyanka was wooden and burned down in 1848. A new stone church in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was started in 1865, based on a design by architect Ivan Chetverikov. The church belongs to the so-called "Muravyovkas" — standardized Orthodox churches built in the 1860s under the initiative of Governor Mikhail Muravyov. In the 1930s, the crosses were removed, and the building suffered partial damage during artillery shelling by retreating German troops in 1943. Despite this, the church was never completely closed and continued to be used. Restoration began in 2015, and in 2018 the church was re-consecrated.

Architecture

The church in Charetyanka is made of brick and follows a cross-in-square layout with elements of Neoclassicism and Romanesque style. The central space is crowned by a light drum topped with an onion-shaped dome. The altar area is rectangular, with a pediment and a gable roof. The walls feature arched windows, relief crosses, and decorative elements. On the western side stands a three-tiered bell tower in Romanesque style with arched openings and a faceted dome. The architectural image of the church corresponds to typical features of Orthodox church construction of the mid-19th century.

Cultural and Historical Significance

The church in Charetyanka is a fine example of provincial church architecture of its time. Its construction is linked to an important period in the history of Belarusian religious architecture, when “governor-standard” designs became widespread. The church is of interest not only architecturally but also as a monument of local religious life.
