Church of All Saints in Pirevichi
The Church of All Saints, located in the village of Pirevichi in the Gomel Region, is one of the most striking examples of the Neo-Russian architectural style in Belarus. Built from red brick at the beginning of the 20th century, it impresses with its scale and decorative design. The church remains active today and is open to pilgrims and tourists.
History
The need for a church arose at the end of the 19th century, when the population of Pirevichi exceeded one thousand people. The construction was funded by local landowner Alexandra Rogovich, the widow of a Privy Councillor, who also donated land for the future church. Construction began in 1902, and by June 1903, the first services were already held in the new temple. However, in the 1920s, the church was closed, the bells were removed, and the building was used as a collective farm warehouse. During World War II, the Germans destroyed the bell tower by blowing it up. Restoration began after liberation in 1944, with major renovation work completed for the church’s 95th anniversary in the 1990s.
Architecture
The Church of All Saints was built in the pseudo-Russian style and has a cruciform layout. Its main structure is cubic, crowned with an octagonal drum and dome. The tented roof, prominent arched porch, decorative friezes, arcatures, and kokoshniks give the facade a solemn appearance. The walls are over a meter thick, ensuring durability. The building covers about 500 m². Inside, visitors can admire wall paintings, a three-tiered iconostasis, and ceramic tiles.
