Homestead in Lipovo
Nestled in the village of Lipov near the source of the Vedrich River, the Horvat Estate is one of the few surviving examples of 19th-century noble architecture in Belarus. Surrounded by a picturesque landscape park, the estate’s main building still serves an administrative function today, reminding visitors of its aristocratic past. For travelers seeking to immerse themselves in the spirit of a bygone era, this site is a true hidden gem.
History
Since the late 18th century, the village of Lipov was owned by a Belarusianized branch of the Hungarian Horvat family, who bore the Polish coat of arms «Pobóg». By the mid-19th century, the family had firmly established itself and transformed Lipov into a full-fledged noble residence. Otto Horvat played a key role in developing the estate, laying out the park and completing the construction of the main house in 1862. Unfortunately, in the mid-20th century, the palace was heavily damaged by fire. In 1960, the building was restored. Today, it houses the Republican Agricultural Unitary Enterprise «Experimental Base «Lipovo»».
Architecture
The main manor house is a refined two-story building in the Neoclassical style. Its front façade is adorned with a strict triangular pediment, and the design emphasizes symmetry and grandeur. Though there are no surviving descriptions of the interiors, the structure and surrounding grounds still reflect the taste and affluence of the Horvat family. An equally significant feature is the landscape park, where local and exotic trees coexist — some of them over a hundred years old.
