Church of Peter and Paul in Traby
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul, located in the village of Traby in the Grodno region, is an outstanding example of traditional wooden ecclesiastical architecture of the late 18th century. Dedicated to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, the church retains its architectural, historical, and spiritual significance. It is not only a religious structure but also an important cultural heritage site of Belarus, showcasing the features of traditional church construction.
History
The current building of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul was constructed in 1784. Since then, it has undergone minimal alterations, allowing the original appearance of the church to be preserved. A special place in its history belongs to the iconostasis, created in 1901 in Vilno (now Vilnius). This relic is unique not only for its artistic value but also for the story of its delivery to Traby: local parishioners, demonstrating deep devotion to their faith, carried the carved oak iconostasis by hand for over 80 kilometers.
Architecture
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is built in the traditions of Belarusian folk wooden architecture. Its elongated form resembles a ship, which is characteristic of 18th-century religious buildings. The main facade is adorned with decorative turrets with faceted tops, giving the church a solemn and distinctive appearance. The interior was decorated in the early 20th century. Its central element is a two-tier carved iconostasis made of lacquered oak—a rare and valuable example of religious art.
