Church of Nativity of the Virgin in Kemelishki
The Kemelishki Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a rare example of wooden sacred architecture in Belarus. Located in the picturesque village of Kemelishki in the Grodno region, it is among the most valuable historical and cultural landmarks of the area. The building harmoniously blends styles of Art Nouveau, Neo-Gothic, and Classicism, creating a striking architectural image. It is one of the few wooden churches in Belarus that has been preserved in such excellent condition to this day.
History
According to the most commonly accepted version, the church was built in 1781, although some sources mention 1900 as the construction date. At the end of the 19th century, it was reconstructed: side chapels were added, and the facade was redesigned. The church's history is closely linked with tragic events — during World War II, a Jewish ghetto existed next to the church, and today a Holocaust memorial stands on this site, erected in 1992 at the initiative of Shmuel Keren-Krol.
Architecture
The architectural ensemble includes not only the church itself but also a three-tiered belfry from the early 20th century and a three-span red-brick gate. The facade features two towers of original design — octagons on square bases, crowned with eight-sided spires and four triangular gables. Inside, the church preserves a unique 18th-century organ adorned with fine woodcarving — such decoration is found in only a few churches in Lithuania. Originally, the organ was also accompanied by angel sculptures, which unfortunately have not survived.
