Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary – a pearl of wooden architecture. In the picturesque village of Muravanaya Ashmyanka, located in the Grodno region, stands a unique Catholic church – the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This architectural monument combines elements of Baroque and Classicism, and its history spans more than two centuries. Built in 1790, the church is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus.

History of the Church: From Foundation to the Present Day

The Catholic parish in Muravanaya Ashmyanka was founded as early as 1650, and 140 years later, a modern wooden church was built on the site of the old one. Over the years, it underwent several restorations: in 1841 and 1874, restoration works were carried out, and in the early 20th century, its priest was Father Antoni Jablonski. Remarkably, even during Soviet times, the church remained open, preserving its religious function.

Architectural Features

The church is a rectangular hall-type building with a five-sided apse, transept, and two sacristies. One of the sacristies is unusually located in front of the transept wing. The main structure and the transept arms are covered with gable roofs, while the sacristies have single-pitched roofs. The main facade and the ends of the transept are decorated with pediments topped with onion domes.

Interior and Decoration

The interior of the church impresses with its artistic decoration. In the second half of the 19th century, the walls were adorned with polychrome paintings: elegant garlands of acanthus leaves, lilies, and grape clusters harmoniously combined with liturgical inscriptions. The church houses three carved wooden altars in the Rococo style. The main altar, set on a low pedestal, is decorated with wood carvings and partially preserved gilding, while the side altars follow a similar composition but are more modest in decoration.

The Bell Tower and Surroundings

Next to the church stands a two-tiered bell tower-gate, designed in a square shape. This architectural element adds even more harmony and scenic beauty to the ensemble.

Excursion to Muravanaya Ashmyanka
