Church Trinity in Ischelna
The Holy Trinity Church in the village of Ishchelno is an outstanding example of Late Baroque architecture and one of the few churches in Belarus that continued holding services uninterruptedly even during the Soviet era. Located in the Shchuchyn District of the Grodno Region, it is the main attraction of a small settlement with a history spanning several centuries. This church serves not only as a spiritual center for the local community but also as an intriguing destination for tourists and admirers of historical architecture.
History
The first mention of Ishchelno dates back to the 16th century, when a Catholic parish was established here. The current church was completed in 1758 at the initiative of Grodno horunzhy (banner-bearer) Józef Valu. Despite the turbulent events of subsequent centuries, the church never ceased functioning — even during Soviet times — which helped preserve it in good condition. In the early 20th century, a brick presbytery (priest’s house) was built next to the church. It still stands behind the church today, though it is no longer in use.
Architecture
The architectural design of the church in Ishchelno is a striking representation of Late Baroque style. The building has a single nave, yet its massive façade with two four-tiered towers gives the structure a monumental and expressive appearance. The towers extend beyond the main volume of the building, forming a relief composition together with the ornate pediment. In the 19th century, a bell tower in a similar style was added nearby, completing the architectural ensemble. Inside, a rich Baroque altar has been preserved, featuring Corinthian columns, stucco decorations, and an old organ. A particular point of pride is the unique 18th-century sundial crafted by the Vilnius master Maletsky. It stands on a stone pedestal and shows accurate time based on the geographic latitude of its location.
