Preobrazhenskaya Church in Novoe Popina
The Transfiguration Church (Spaso-Preobrazhenskaya Church) in the village of Novaya Popina, Drogichin District, Brest Region is a monument of wooden architecture from the early 19th century and an active Orthodox church, consecrated in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord.
History
The wooden church in Novaya Popina was built in 1810 at the initiative of the head of the nobility of the Pinsk District, Mikhail Ozheshko. The church was erected on a stone foundation, with a wooden bell tower built nearby. In 1870, thanks to the donations of parishioners, a new iconostasis was installed, and a bell worth 100 silver rubles was donated. In the following years, improvement works were carried out: the construction of a fence, roof renovation, and the building of a sacristy. In the spring of 1962, the church was closed, and worship services resumed in 1989 after the church was re-consecrated.
Architecture
The church is a wooden structure on a stone foundation. The main rectangular log structure is covered with a hipped roof topped by an onion dome. A pentagonal apse with a side sacristy adjoins the eastern side, while a rectangular vestibule extends to the west. In the second half of the 20th century, a two-tiered four-sided tented bell tower with a dome was erected above the vestibule. The façades are clad with horizontal boards, decorated with arched windows and wooden posts in the wall sections. Inside, the wooden iconostasis stands out. The church is an example of vernacular architecture.
Cultural and religious significance
The Transfiguration Church serves as a spiritual center for local residents and a place of worship. Its architectural appearance reflects the traditions of Belarusian wooden church construction of the early 19th century, making it an important monument of the region’s cultural heritage.
