Church of Michael in Osovcy

The Orthodox Parish Church of Archangel Michael in the village of Osovtsy, Drogichin Deanery of the Brest Diocese, is one of the unique monuments of Belarusian wooden architecture. This church, belonging to the Belarusian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), has a rich history and serves as a spiritual center for residents of several settlements: Osovtsy, Belin, Adamovo, Guta, Krestinovo, Yaloch, Yazviny.

History of the Church

The church in Osovtsy has existed since ancient times, but the exact date of its construction and the name of its architect remain unknown. In 1780, due to the dilapidation of the original building, landowner Kliment Ozheszko initiated the reconstruction of the church. During the same period, a wooden bell tower was erected nearby, complementing the architectural ensemble.

The Miraculous Icon of the Mother of God "The Sorrowful"

In 1836, a new iconostasis was installed in the church. One of the main relics of the church was the venerated miraculous icon of the Mother of God "The Sorrowful." Painted on canvas with oil paints, it was distinguished by expressive artwork. In 1814, the icon was adorned with a silver riza with gilded halos and precious stones. Initially, it was kept in the Belin Church, built in 1785, but after the church's destruction in the 1880s, the icon was transferred to the Osovtsy Church. In 1893, it was placed in a gilded kiot on the left choir of the church. The icon was venerated on August 15 (Feast of the Assumption), attracting numerous pilgrims, including Catholics.

The Parish School – A Contribution to Education

In 1861, a parish school was opened at the church, where 41 boys and 10 girls were educated. Educational activities continued for decades, strengthening the spiritual and cultural development of the local population.

Church Reconstruction and Expansion

In 1876, the church underwent a major renovation: a new iconostasis was installed, the foundation was reinforced, and the roof was repaired. After the restoration work was completed, the church was re-consecrated on September 26, 1876. By 1898, it was part of the Ivanovo Deanery and served 1,712 parishioners. The church also housed a parish school and a public school, with a priest and a psalmist in service.

The Church During the Soviet Era and Today

Unlike many churches, the Church of Archangel Michael remained open during the Soviet period, preserving its religious function. In the early 21st century, it attracted pilgrims from across Belarus due to the influence of its rector, Father Viktor Soroka. Until 2019, it was the only church in the deanery without electricity and heating, emphasizing its authenticity and historical value.

A Cultural Heritage Monument

The Church of Archangel Michael is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus. This monument of folk wooden architecture is a significant tourist attraction, drawing pilgrims and lovers of architectural heritage.
