The Kamenets state grammar school
The Kamenets State Gymnasium is a significant historical and cultural landmark in the Brest Region, located next to the famous Kamenets Tower. The building, featuring elements of classicism, has preserved its early 20th-century appearance and remains an important educational and architectural monument in Kamenets.
History
The gymnasium was built in 1930, when Kamenets was still part of Poland. Its construction followed a design by Professor Tadeusz Różycki of Vilnius University. Originally named «Powszechna» — meaning «for everyone» — the school offered a seven-year program. The first director was Tadeusz Mazur, a mathematics teacher. Among the first thirty students were children of various ethnicities: Belarusians, Poles, and Jews.
After the war, the building housed a ten-year school, and later an elementary school and a boarding facility. In 2002, the building was renovated and regained its gymnasium status. During restoration, a bottle containing a message written in Russian, German, and Polish — a kind of «time capsule» from the 1930 builders — was discovered under the roof.
Architecture
The architectural style of the building combines elements of classicism and functionality typical of interwar educational institutions. Its proportions, restrained decoration, and symmetrical façade reflect a strict academic design. The layout also included dormitory rooms for students from surrounding areas.
