Church of Michael in Tokari

Type: Churches, Wooden architecture Date of Foundation: 1816 year Status: Republican value

History of the Construction of St. Michael’s Church in Tokari Village

The first church in Tokari, according to historians, was built at the turn of the 15th–16th centuries. As early as 1592, the “Tokarski noblemen” donated land to the church, confirming the existence of a parish at that time. In the 17th century, the church was converted to the Uniate faith, and in 1816 a new Uniate temple — St. Michael’s Church — was erected on its site. After the abolition of the Union in 1839, the building became part of the Lithuanian Orthodox Diocese. By the end of the 19th century, the parish numbered 2,734 parishioners from seven surrounding villages.

Architecture and Interior Decoration

St. Michael’s Church is an example of traditional Belarusian wooden ecclesiastical architecture of an elongated form. The building consists of a rectangular log structure with a vestibule and a square apse oriented to the west, with low sacristies on both sides. Above the vestibule rises a tiered bell tower with an octagonal drum and dome, decorated with an icon of Saint Michael.

The walls are vertically boarded and reinforced with tie beams, while above the main entrance there is an elegant semicircular dormer. The interior of the church was characterized by simplicity and harmony; ancient icons were once kept here, which were later transferred to Minsk and are now preserved in museum collections.

Legends and Beliefs Associated with the Church

Many legends are connected with this church. Locals say that on the site where the church now stands, miraculous phenomena once occurred — people saw the image of Archangel Michael in heavenly radiance. It is believed that this vision inspired the builders to erect the new temple in the 19th century. The church has always been considered the protector of the village of Tokari, and prayers offered here are said to guard against misfortunes and illnesses.
