The memorial sign at the site of R. L. Traugutt’s estate is located in the village of Shestakovo, Kamenets District, Brest Region — at the site of the Traugutt family estate and the birthplace, in 1826, of Romuald Ludwikovich Traugutt, one of the leaders of the 1863–1864 uprising. It serves as a reminder of the life and heroic deeds of one of the key figures of the national liberation movement in Belarus and Poland.

History

Romuald Traugutt was born on January 16, 1826, in Shestakovo, to Ludwik Traugutt and Alojzia Bloczkowa. After serving in the Russian army, participating in the Crimean War, and retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel, he led the uprising in 1863. In April 1864, he was arrested and executed in the Warsaw Citadel.

The first memorial sign at the site of the estate was installed in 1926 to mark the 100th anniversary of Traugutt’s birth. It was an oak cross with a memorial plaque. In 2003, at the initiative of the Consulate General of Poland in Brest, a new composition was erected — a boulder with a commemorative plaque.

The current memorial sign is a large boulder with a metal plaque containing information about Romuald Traugutt. It stands in an open clearing where the Traugutt family estate once stood.
