Holy Trinity Church in Kazishche

Type: Churches, Wooden architecture Date of Foundation: 1879 year Status: Regional value Republic of Belarus, Brest region, Kobrin district, Kozische

The Kozišče Holy Trinity Church is one of the most distinctive Orthodox shrines in the Polesia region, located in the picturesque village of Kozišče, Brest Region. This wooden church, with a centuries-old history and spiritual atmosphere, rightfully holds an important place among the sites included in tours across Belarus. It is not only a place of worship and prayer but also a monument of folk architecture preserved thanks to the dedication of local residents. The church can be visited as part of a private tour or you can book a tour that includes the church and nearby attractions.

History

The first church on this site was built in 1805 by landowner Bruno Pusłowski. It was a modest structure on sandy hills, marked only by a single cross that indicated its sacred purpose. The church followed the Greek Catholic tradition, lacking an iconostasis and traditional liturgical items. Significant changes took place in the mid-19th century under the leadership of Father Lev Krechetovich, who added an altar, created an iconostasis, and landscaped the church cemetery. Unfortunately, that church was destroyed by fire in 1914. The current church was erected in 1927 by the efforts of the parishioners. Every village resident contributed — from financial support to carpentry work. The project was based on a standard design by the Russian Orthodox Church. Even during the years of hardship — war and persecution — the church survived: it was temporarily closed but not demolished, and in 1989, it reopened its doors to the faithful. These events make the church a fascinating destination for themed excursions from Minsk and other cities.

Architecture

The Kozišče church is an example of traditional wooden ecclesiastical architecture from the early 20th century. Its elongated rectangular volume with a pentagonal apse, tented belfry, and a dome on an octagonal drum gives the building a monumental appearance. The entrance is adorned with a portico and triangular pediment, emphasizing the solemnity of the architectural design. Thanks to its harmonious proportions and natural materials, the church blends organically into the rural landscape. These features are definitely worth appreciating during a tour of Belarus, especially for those who admire architecture.

Excursions

The Kozišče Holy Trinity Church is featured in spiritual and architectural excursions across Belarus. A particularly popular option is the excursion from Minsk, which not only introduces visitors to the church’s history but also includes a visit to the preserved church cemetery with oak and linden alleys. You will have the opportunity to feel the atmosphere of a Belarusian temple restored by the efforts of local residents.
