- St. Michael Church in Novoselki
St. Michael Church in Novoselki
Belarus is abundant with settlements named "Novoselki". In the Minsk region alone, there are more than twenty! The reason is simple: when people moved to a new place, they often named it Novoselki, which literally means "new settlement, new village." Similarly, you can find many settlements in Belarus with names like Krasnoye, Rudnya, Porechye, and others.
Where is Novoselki in Kobrin District?
The first mention of Novoselki dates back to 1563 when it belonged to S. Strakhorski. Today, Novoselki is the administrative center of the Novoselki village council. The council's territory is home to just over 1,800 residents, 669 of whom live directly in the agrotown.
Novoselki is only 25 kilometers from Kobrin and 71 kilometers from Brest. The town is located on the picturesque western bank of the Trostyanitsa River. It has all the necessary infrastructure: a secondary school, a post office, a district hospital, several shops, and even a school for children with special needs.
The Holy Michael Church – the main attraction
The main attraction of Novoselki is the wooden Holy Michael Church, built in 1881 and consecrated in honor of Archangel Michael. The official construction date is indicated on the plaque, but the exterior of the church suggests an earlier origin. There is a belief that the church was erected at the beginning of the 19th century and underwent significant reconstruction in 1881.
This charming church stands out with its blue facade and white decor, retaining the charm of old Belarusian architecture. Every tourist visiting on an excursion from Minsk or other cities will want to see this unique building.
Archangel Michael – protector and patron
Archangel Michael is one of the most revered saints in Christianity. In Orthodox tradition, he is also called Archistrategos, meaning "chief of the holy army of Angels and Archangels." He is considered a protector from evil and a patron of warriors, guarding the souls of the dead and the sleeping. Churches around the world are dedicated to him, and the church in Novoselki is one such sacred place.
