The building of the former landed-of the Peasant Bank

The Peasant Land Bank in Vitebsk is one of the city's iconic buildings, constructed in the early 20th century. It combines elements of Art Nouveau and classical style, creating a unique architectural appearance. Today, the building belongs to the Vitebsk Academy of Veterinary Medicine, but its rich history and expressive decor make it a popular site for excursions across Belarus.

History of Creation

The bank building was constructed in 1917 according to the design of the renowned architect Tarasov. It was intended to provide credit to peasants, supporting the development of agriculture in the region. However, after the 1917 revolution, the bank ceased its operations, and in 1921, the Vitebsk Higher Agricultural Technical School was established in the building. Later, in 1924, it was transformed into the Vitebsk Veterinary Institute. During World War II, the building was occupied by German forces, serving as the field commandant’s office and secret police headquarters. After the liberation of Vitebsk, the institute returned to its former location, and in 1994, it was reorganized into the Vitebsk Academy of Veterinary Medicine, which continues to occupy the building today.

Architecture

The architectural design of the Peasant Land Bank is a blend of massiveness and elegance. The building is structured in the shape of the letter «P» and made of brick. Its expressiveness is emphasized by tower-like elements that add dynamism to the structure. Architect Tarasov incorporated elements of Old Russian style into the design, including decorative kokoshniks, «dynki» ornaments, and arched windows. The main façade, facing Baumana Street, is adorned with a mosaic coat of arms of Vitebsk from 1781, executed in a rich color palette.
