The Yakub Kolas Drama Theatre is a landmark cultural site in Vitebsk, located in the historical center of the city. Built on the territory of the Upper Castle, where the city's history began, the theatre is part of a picturesque architectural ensemble. From its terrace, visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the Western Dvina River and the main attractions of Vitebsk. The theatre hosts performances of various genres annually and serves as a venue for international festivals. Many excursions across Belarus include it in their itinerary, and those wishing to book a guided tour with a theatre visit can take advantage of thematic tours.

History

The theatre was founded on November 21, 1926, based on the Belarusian Drama Studio at the Moscow Art Theatre (MKhAT). Among its first actors were famous People's Artists of the USSR who made significant contributions to the development of Belarusian culture. The original theatre building was not particularly durable, as it was constructed during difficult times with minimal resources. The modern theatre building, designed by architects Maksimov and Ryskina, was completed only in 1958. In 1944, the theatre was named after Yakub Kolas, and in 1977, it was awarded academic status. In 2001, it became a national theatre, reaffirming its high status in Belarusian cultural life.

Architecture

The theatre’s modern building is a post-war architectural monument. Its main façade, facing the Millennium Square, is designed in the form of a grand Doric portico with eight columns and a triangular pediment adorned with decorative reliefs. The side facades are decorated with rustication, pilasters, and stucco inserts, while the end façade features a four-column portico. Inside, the theatre presents a harmonious blend of classical architecture and modern functionality. The spacious auditorium accommodates 520 spectators, with a parterre and two balconies ensuring excellent visibility from any seat. Around the auditorium, there are service rooms, while the interiors are adorned with elements of theatrical art.
