History

The buildings of the former barracks of the 163rd Lankaran-Nasheburg Infantry Regiment are a valuable architectural monument from the late 19th century, located in the historic center of Vitebsk, on Lenin Street. This is one of the oldest and most important streets in the city, stretching approximately 2.5 kilometers. Before the revolution, this street was home to key administrative and public institutions: the city council, the gendarmerie, the Bernardine Church, the Brozi Hotel, the Treasury Chamber, the Mariinskaya Gymnasium, the Pokrovsky Cathedral, and the barracks of the Lankaran Regiment.
Since 1910, one of the barracks buildings housed the Private Men’s Gymnasium of I.R. Nerush and the Vitebsk Teachers’ Institute. It was here that the history of Vitebsk State University named after P.M. Masherov began. The institute occupied 20 rooms in the former barracks and trained teachers for urban schools. During World War II, Lenin Street suffered heavy damage, but the former barracks buildings miraculously survived and remain important witnesses to Vitebsk’s military and educational history.
